As AI tools become more common in education, many institutions have turned to AI-detection software to safeguard academic integrity. While the appeal of a “quick fix” is strong, detection-first approaches are deeply flawed. Overreliance on these tools can harm students, create inequities, and undermine trust. This chapter explores why AI detection is limited and how faculty can pursue more constructive alternatives.
Why Detection Falls Short

- AI-ready assessment design: Build assignments that emphasize personal context, process, and higher-order thinking, making it less practical to outsource work.
- Rubrics and transparency: Clear criteria reward originality, effort, and authentic engagement.
- Dialogue with students: Instead of relying on hidden surveillance, create open conversations about ethical use and responsible disclosure.
- Institutional support: Policies and professional development should emphasize literacy, not policing.
